Frond of the Uluhe fern.  In Spring it looks as though the rain forest has been planted with little metal sculptures - they are actually the Uluhe ferns which are the first fern to come back into damaged areas.

Flowering Silversword fern.  This endangered species grows on the side of Mauna Kea.  It grows up to 30 years before flowering and then dies.  In the background are one of the pu'u's on the side of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
